Well, Steph.... I read your article and do understand your feelings.
We moved from Europe to the US two years ago and I do believe schools here have a long way to go green. OUr school tries... but a lot is theory and not practice.
About your plastic bags: in my kids school in Belgium plastic bags, ziploc bags etc.. were prohibited. For lunch the kids all bring tupperware like washable containers and whoever brings a plastic bag or tetra container (drinks, milk, etc...) has it sent back home with a :( note. The first few months were hard, but now everybody takes it as natural. The school also has a "drop the heating for a couple of °" day. The children get a reminder note that the next day they have to put on an extra sweater and nobody ever complained that it was cold. (Why are the classes here in Florida sooo freezing cold that the children also have to bring a sweater ????)
These are just some of my thoughts. Hope they are helpful to you and yes I will check out the website. Good Luck.

The economic limitations facing schools may make them more open to green options. It seems like a great win-win for schools and families!

This is a good project. My children took the books that they used during their last year at school. There were a number of books that still had quite a few pages that could still be used. I shall suggest to their school that these books can be used the following school year. We all know that resources in schools are always under pressure.

Getting kids involved is really the thing that, at the end of the day, is going to save the planet. I really do applaud you for the program - good work!
