We’ve been listening to Lucas Miller a great deal lately so the Koala Sisters asked me to feature him in Greening Kids. If you haven’t already discovered his award-winning music, you are in for a treat!

Lucas Miller is a talented singer-songwriter who has a degree in zoology (hence his nickname above). He creates fun, catchy, and educational songs that are interesting to children and adults alike. Our three- and five-year olds now walk around singing about carnivores, symbiosis, and metamorphosis, showing his music is great for building vocabulary as well as knowledge of scientific concepts.

My favorite part of his work is that it covers serious issues in humorous and hopeful ways. His songs touch on subjects such as wetland preservation and DDT use without ever becoming overbearing or depressing. When his songs end, listeners feel like they can help make the world a better place. What a gift to give a child!

His songs also have incredible depth. (When was the last time you thought that after listening to children’s music?) One of our girls’ favorite songs is “Living in Symbiosis” on the “Gotta Take Care of the Hive” CD. We’ve used this song to talk about sharing, taking care of the earth, helping each other, and taking turns in addition to the clown fish, anemone, and symbiosis topics raised directly in the song. In fact, the end of this song has become my personal theme for this site. To quote the song:

“And if we each can do our own small part
We can share this world with all beneath the stars.”

This is exactly what we hope to do and to teach our children.

Mr. Miller has also written some children’s books, including Fifi the Ferocious, so look for his print material as well.
