EPA Labels Carbon Dioxide Threat to Public Health

April 18, 2009 by Steph

carbon dioxideYesterday the Environmental Protection Agency published a proposed finding which formally declared carbon dioxide and five other heat-trapping gases to be pollutants that endanger the public health and welfare under the Clear Air Act. The other five heat trapping gases included in the proposed finding are hydrofluorocarbons, methane, nitrous oxide, perfuorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluoride.

The proposed finding is the result of a scientific review ordered by the U.S. Supreme Court after they ruled on greenhouse gases in Massachusetts v. Environmental Protection Agency.

The publication of this proposed finding triggers the beginning of the next step, a 60 day public comment period. Only after the public comment period is complete may the EPA publish proposed regulations on the emission of these gases. The EPA has published detailed instructions for submitting written comments. The EPA is also holding two public hearings on this subject.

For more information, see the EPA’s ruling.

Between this and the new change on research on pesticides, I have a feeling that EPA staff members are starting a good weekend today. I know I am!
