Another Perspective on Trash

September 22, 2008 by Steph

another perspective on trashTime.com features David Chameides in one of today’s articles. Mr. Chameides is the author of Sustainable Dave, a website showcasing a variety of sustainable topics.

I was especially interested in his 365 Days of Trash blog. We’ve cut our trash pickup from one per week to one per month or less so have been working to reduce our own contribution to the landfills. However, our efforts seem to have peaked since we’ve held steady for a couple of months. I was hoping to find more ideas on his site and did. (Did you know Tom’s of Maine toothpaste tubes were recyclable? I was so excited to learn that!) If you are interested in reducing your share of the waste stream, I recommend a visit.

It was also interesting to think about trash from another perspective. I think “out of sight, out of mind” is the default setting for humans. Keeping the items in sight brings an entirely new level to personal accountability. I really appreciate his sharing the experience.

Lastly, I had fun imaging the conversations he must have had with his wife before starting on this journey. “Hey hon, I was wondering….” I’ve never met either of them but think they must have a strong marriage to embark on a project like this!
