Airing Our Not-Quite-Dirty Laundry
November 14, 2008 by Steph
I remember, before becoming a parent, reading articles about large families and being amazed at the amount of laundry they always talked about doing. At that point in my life, laundry was a weekend affair and I simply couldn’t imagine it spilling over into the rest of the week. Then I had kids.
Sometime last year, probably after our family-wide bought with stomach flu, I decided we had to do something about the laundry situation. It took some time but we finally figured out a way to reduce the laundry we generate without banning all fun for the Koala Sisters.
The secret – lots of hooks. Now PJs, dress up clothes, and all the other clothes that are put on briefly but not dirtied have a place to go besides the hamper. This one change has reduced our laundry by at least a load a week. In a non-flu week, that is a 20% reduction!
We installed several hooks in the girls’ bedroom at their level so they could hang up their own things. We found hooks on sale at Michaels, of all places, but I’ve also seen them in home improvement stores like Lowes.
Now we are saving water, energy, detergent, and helping our clothes last longer. Love it!
