A Good Home for Used Books

July 25, 2008 by Steph

used books donationAs our children have become older, they have outgrown not just their clothes but also their books. Now I know exactly where we should send the books that no longer fit – to the Reader to Reader program.

Profiled in today’s The Christian Science Monitor, this organization collects gently used and new books for children and teens and then distributes them, free of charge, to school and public libraries in the countries’ poorest communities. When I learned Reader to Reader also sponsors mentoring programs to help young people learn to love reading, I was completely hooked.

The article quotes David Mazor, the organization’s founder:

Growing up in a family that loved to read, Mazor couldn’t tolerate so many children lacking books. “In affluent communities, people were often just sort of tossing the books away because they didn’t know what to do with them,” he says. “We could match up that need with that resource.”

Filling a pressing need through recycling a valuable resource while teaching children the benefits of helping others – I love it! Next time you are tidying your bookshelves, save the landfills and help children at the same time by sending your outgrown books to the folks at Reader to Reader!
